Jonathan Bentz graduated from West Virginia University on the four year plan. He was once a stringer and wire contributor for the AP at WVU football and basketball games; now he markets Nemacolin Woodlands Resort online. Some say Jay-Z bit his style, and Tom Cruise has recently been cast to star in his biopic, due next Christmas. He bleeds BLUE and GOLD, pays homage to Mike Gansey with every 3-ball he swishes, and dreams of being the first whiteboy to dunk a 720. Give him a shout at jonathan.bentz@atomicsportsmedia.com.

Ramblings of a Retired Collegian

I know most NFL fans probably didn’t like it, but seeing college football play a marquee match up on a Monday night was a stroke of genius.  Even though Miami and Florida State play on the big stage frequently, I can’t think of a better opportunity for the first week of the season than a Monday night game.  There were no other game to divert attention from “The U” and the ‘Noles.

If Larry Coker really does get fired at the end of the season, I can think of about 103 colleges that should seriously consider firing their football coach and hiring him instead…

And about 15 NFL teams as well.

The horse collar tackle has to be regulated in college football the way it is regulated in the NFL.  I hate to make a case for a rule change based on one instance, but Michael Bush’s case probably isn’t the only time a player has been lost for the season in D-I to a horse collar tackle.  If it’s not good for the NFL, it shouldn’t be good for college, either.

Bush’s injury, to me, kills Louisville’s chances at playing for a BCS-berth.  Defensively they were already a step down to West Virginia, and now their rushing attack takes a major downgrade to the Mountaineers.  Brian Brohm can pass all day on WVU, but if they can’t stop Steve Slaton (and it doesn’t look like anyone on WVU’s schedule will) the Mountaineers should win the game.

Speaking of WVU, Pat White seems to be Rich Rodriguez’s dream QB: a guy with an accurate cannon who can run a 4.3.  If he remains as accurate throughout the season as he was against Marshall Saturday, he should begin practicing his Heisman stance.

Ole Miss looks good.

Colorado looks bad… real bad.  Dan Haskins is probably missing that Smurf Turf a lot right now.

Montana State will win the I-AA national title.

***

Penn State is underrated… again.

***

Cal – already highly overrated considering they play in the Pac-10 – is probably the most overrated team in the majors conferences.

Someone put 11 in the box against Navy.  I double dog dare – no, make that triple dog dare - the rest of the coaches who coach against them this season.  East Carolina hasn’t been able to stop the run for four years, but no team outside of a PS2 game should run for over 400 yards in a game… especially when they only passed for six yards!  That is just stupid.

***

Ohio State is nasty… nastier than I gave them credit for going into this season.  Obviously Ted Ginn was going to be nice, but Troy Smith is a good quarterback.  All along I thought he was just a scrambler.  Sure it was a season opener against an inferior opponent, but I would guess that the Buckeyes could put up 617 more yards on Notre Dame if they suited up right now.

Speaking of Notre Dame, is their #2 ranking another case of media overhype?  Shouldn’t they have beat Georgia Tech a little more comfortably than 4?  I’m sure VIPsports.com made a fortune on people who took the Irish in that wager.

USC and Texas are still pretty good.

Ohio State v. Texas, already a classic, is going to be a great shootout… look for the scoring to finish somewhere in the 40’s for both teams.  I highly doubt they will be able to stop each other.

It was nice of Tennessee’s varsity squad to show up and play for the first time since ‘04 on Saturday… hopefully the practice squad will stay off the game field the rest of the year.
