I look like I was given a full frontal lobotomy. I have a stupid grin plastered on my face, and I keep giggling to myself. I think I set the record for exclamation points used on G-Chat today. I have a degree in journalism, but I can’t think of any adjective to use besides “unbelievable.” Nights like February 3rd, 2008 will do that to you. More often than not, sports will let you down. All the mediocre games, the off-the-field shenanigans -- the monotony sometimes makes you question why you devote so much of your life to something so inconsequential. Nights like February 3rd, 2008 remind us why we love sports so much. The Giants didn’t just win the Super Bowl. They brought all Giants fans, and Patriot-haters, to that higher place which we think we will never reach in our lifetimes. For that reason, I think there are some thank-yous in order here. Thank you, Eli Manning. We all know the story by now. Much-maligned, controversial trade, doesn’t show any fire, throws off his back foot, sounds dumb in interviews, and the list goes on. Thanks for not listening to us. We should have realized how tough you are after playing Week 2 with a separated shoulder. What you have done now is give yourself complete immunity for the rest of your career. The draft-day trade has officially been validated. On that note… Thank you, Ernie Accorsi, former Giants GM. You knew Eli had this in him when nobody else did. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Looking at the current roster is like reading a “How To” manual on the NFL draft: Osi Umenyiora, 2nd round. Justin Tuck, 3rd round. Brandon Jacobs, 2nd round. Gibril Wilson, 5th round. Chris Snee, 2nd round. And every free agent you signed played a key role. Plaxico Burress, Antonio Pierce, Sam Madison, Kareem McKenzie, and Fred Robbins, among others. In the book “The GM,” which followed you during your last season in 2006, you addressed the team after their playoff loss in Philadelphia, saying, “There’s a championship in this room.” Very prescient. Thank you, current GM Jerry Reese. Giants fans worried that our only offseason additions were Kawika Mitchell and Lawrence Tynes. Little did we know that one of the all-time great drafts would play key roles in the championship season. Six of the seven players drafted contributed. Here are the picks, in order: Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Jay Alford, Zak DeOssie, Kevin Boss, Michael Johnson, Ahmad Bradshaw. Unbelievable. Thank you, Tom Coughlin, for sticking to your guns, but also softening up at the same time. Every move you made paid off this season, and your players were behind you from Day 1 of training camp. I hope your face is back to normal after the Green Bay game. Thank you, Plaxico Burress. This is the same guy whose work ethic Pittsburgh questioned? After recording the greatest postseason performance in Giants history in Green Bay and the Super Bowl-winning touchdown catch on a bum ankle, knee, and balky back, your tremendous heart may have made up for all your other ailments. Thank you, David Tyree. I can’t wait to see how dramatic your catch looks on NFL Films. Thank you, defensive line. Michael Strahan, sometimes you can be a little off-putting, but now you have reached Phil Simms-level hero status in New York. Osi Umenyiora, the lone Pro Bowl representative, if you stay the course, you will be a great one. Is anybody more unsung than Justin Tuck? The guy recorded 10 sacks during the regular season, then single-handedly gave Tom Brady happy feet in the first half of the Super Bowl. The unit as a whole was the real reason the Giants won. Thank you, Bill Belichick. Thanks for going for it on fourth-and-13 in field-goal range. Those three points didn’t end up being the difference or anything. And thanks for making the victory so much sweeter by acting like a petulant little kid after the game. No class whatsoever. Thank you, Glick, Jonny, Mike, Lavie, Zach and London, for being there (almost) every Sunday along the way. We kept the faith all the way through. Mike, the Jets will get there some day. Thanks, Dad for making me a Giants fan. All those Sundays watching the Dave Browns and Kent Grahams of the world turn into something sublime like this makes it all worth it. Get well soon. Finally, the New York Giants. On Februray 3rd, 2008, you took us to that place. Thanks a million. |
